Temporomandibular joint disorders, commonly referred to as TMJ, affect the jaw joint and can cause great pain for those who suffer from it. Patients with TMJ symptoms should not ignore them. TMJ can lead to very serious dental and facial problems, including cracked, worn, and severely damaged teeth and permanently damaged ligaments and tendons in and around the jaw. TMJ has been known to cause debilitating headaches and muscle soreness. Although the diagnosis of TMJ is difficult, many treatments are available and range from the simple, such as wearing a splint, to the extreme, such as surgery.
Individual symptoms vary but include facial, ear, or jaw joint pain; a jaw that locks, doesn’t open fully, or doesn’t open comfortably; a bite that feels uncomfortable, is continually changing, or just doesn’t feel right to the patient; headaches; pain in the neck, back, or shoulder; and swelling on the side of the face.
Officially TMJ disorder is labeled as TMD, or temporomandibular joint disorder. Often patients who experience TMD have problems with their bite, or a malocclusion. Before TMD can be treated, the TMJ dentists at the New Jersey Cosmetic & Wellness Center must evaluate your bite to diagnose bite problems, tooth mobility, muscle pain and other signs of malocclusion. Stabilizing your bite improves your appearance yet also allows teeth to come together in the most comfortable and functional way possible, alleviating jaw pain as well as other symptoms associated with a bad bite or TMD.
Treatment for TMJ at our New Jersey office will depend on the severity of your condition and the neuromuscular treatments that will restore your optimal bite position. These may vary from conservative treatments such as mouth appliances that are worn at night to more invasive surgeries. Most TMD patients can benefit from restorative dental appliances that reduce the effects of TMD and help them to live pain-free.
